SOME OF THE QUESTIONS I AM ASKED AT MY FERTILITY ACUPUNCTURE CLINIC IN BLACKROCK, DUBLIN

How long does it take to become pregnant?

How long does it take to become pregnant? This is a familiar question that I am asked at my Dublin fertility acupuncture clinic. Some women get pregnant quickly if they are having sex regularly, every two to three days and time sex around ovulation. According to medical statistics, eight out of ten couples where women is aged under 40 will get pregnant by one year. Nine out of ten couples will get pregnant within two years.

Is time running out for me to have a baby?

It is a known fact that fertility declines with age and this declines even further over the age of 35. Largely because the number of eggs decrease. After the age of 40 it becomes harder and women are often offered IVF treatment as an option. One study showed that .

7 out of 10 women aged 30 will conceive within one year.

6 out of 10 women aged 35 will conceive within one year.

About 4 out of 10 women aged 40 will conceive within one year.

How can I improve my fertility?

There are a number of things that you can do to improve your fertility. You can make some lifestyle choices by: being active, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, cutting down on caffeine, if not altogether, avoiding alcohol and drugs. If you are chosing the natural pregnancy option acupuncture treatments on a weekly basis for at least 12 weeks will help balance the endocrine system, improve the blood flow to the uterus and increase womb lining.

How do I increase my chances my chances of becoming pregnant?

Having sex every 2-3 days will give you the best chance. That way there should be sperm waiting when the egg is released. An active sex life is sometimes all that a couple need to conceive. But if this isn’t possible you need to have an idea when you might be ovulating. This usually happens between 10 and 16 days before the start of your next period. Make a note in your calendar the dys that you bleed during your period and then count how many days from the frst day of your period to the next period to work out the length of your cycle. Have sex in the days leading up to ovulation and continue during ovulation.

How do I know when I am ovulating?

You can buy an ovulation predictor kit from chemists or on Amazon e.g. Clearblue Digital Ovulation Test that are simple to use. They can detect a hormone in your urine that increases when ovulation is about to take place. The simplest kit tests the lutenising hormone (LH) which increases 24-36 hours before ovulation. This will halp to identify the best two days for conception, although it is possible to be fertile a day or two before and after this time. The kit can be especially useful if your periods are irregular. Acpuncture treatment helps to regulate a cycle. Or you can download an App to your phone e.g. Fertility Friend – there are a number of app options available.

Be aware of cervical mucus. Mucus is secreted throughout the menstrual cycle. It begins as a sticky white supstance and gradually becomes thinner and clearer. Before and during ovulation the amount of mucus increases and becomes much thinner, slippy and stretchy like a raw egg white. This elps sperm to swim through.

Some women prefer to use temperature charts. This can be a useful tool which is used at exactly the same time each morning and shows when your temperature rises by about 0.2c when ovulation has taken place. Sometimes though women find charts stressful to use and can create a buildup of anxiety.

How can I tell if I am infertile?

Usually if a couple haven’t managed to get pregnant within a year it means something isn’t right. Make an appointment with your GP and have blood tests to check your hormone levels. Have tests to see how well your ovaries might respond to fertility drugs and an examination to see if your fallopian tubes are blocked. Infertility is not a word a couple like to hear but it’s always best to know what the problem is and what the available options are. Both your and your partner should be offered tests There are a number of causes for infertility or reduced fertility: Endometriosis, Poor egg quality, PCOS, fallopian tube problems, poor sperm quality, age, premature ovarian insufficiency, unexplained infertility.

What are my medical options?

Drugs such as Clomid to help with ovulation

Surgery to treat abnormalities such as endometriosis and tube blockages

ART/IVF to include donor or egg sperm if necessary

Drug treatments can cause a stress on the body and can induce anxiety. That is why it is advisable to have acupuncture treatment to run in tandem to both complement medical protocols and relieve anxiety and lack of sleep.
